Media Release: Marae recycling in full swing in Far North

"Recycling on marae in the Far North is in full swing with the implementation of the Para Kore program" says waste advisor Jaroz Popata.

Ms Popata is busy this month giving presentations about Para Kore (Zero Waste) at several marae to assist them to reduce their waste production down to zero.

"We offer a free program to marae providing resources such as bins and signs, as well as on-going training and support to help with waste minimisation at marae."

The Para Kore programme is funded primarily by the Ministry for the Environment's waste minimisation fund. The programme was set up by the Raglan based community group Marae Para Kore Inc. Soc. which now has waste advisors across half the country with the aim of helping every marae in Aotearoa to be working towards zero waste by 2020.

"For me, working with our people to uphold our kaitiaki (guardian) role is just awesome. We have a responsibility to look after Papatūānuku (Mother Earth) and by reducing our waste, recycling and composting, we are doing just that."
